The church stood in the village square, its spire reaching toward heaven. Private Leo Tanaka's squad had orders to clear it—snipers were using the bell tower.

They approached carefully, hugging the walls. Leo pushed open the heavy oak door.

Inside, sunlight streamed through stained glass, painting the pews in colors. An old woman knelt at the altar, praying. She didn't run. Didn't scream. Just prayed.

Leo lowered his rifle. "Clear," he called.

They searched—empty except for the woman. No snipers. No Germans. Just an old woman praying for peace.

Leo left her there, still praying, still hoping. As they moved out, he looked back at the spire, at the cross at its peak.

"God, if you're listening," he whispered, "end this. Please."

The church fell silent behind them. The war continued. But for one moment, in a holy place, a soldier had prayed. Maybe that was enough.
